Ottawa Citizen

By Jennifer Pagliar, The Ottawa Citizen

Maplesoft Group was featured in Ottawa Citizen on June 11, 2010 for their recent contributions to the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation and the work they are doing for the community.

When five young Ottawa professionals with big ambitions put their heads together, they transformed their small consulting firm into a multimillion-dollar Canadian tech success story.

When the same five men decided they wanted to give something back to the community, they acted with equal determination, and the result began to take shape Thursday.

They broke ground at the site of the Wellspring Ottawa Maplesoft Centre, located next to the Cancer Survivors Park at Riverside Drive and Industrial Avenue.

The family-style centre will house programs for cancer survivors and their families on everything from eating healthy to laughter workshops, free of cost and without referrals.

It was made possible by a $1.8-million donation from personal funds and company profits to the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation.

"We try to lead by example and give back to the community in which we live," said Jody Campeau, president and CEO.

"We got to understand what the foundation stood for, and what their campaign was all about. That's where we really became determined and inspired to get involved."

All are between the ages of 32 and 41, and they live, work and raise their families in Ottawa. Their company, and others in Ottawa, are proof that technology firms are still willing to donate to worthy causes, even though the sector as a whole is still struggling economically.

Campeau and Carl Nappert joined the Maplesoft Group as partners in 2001. After buying out the company, the two were joined by Jack Gulas, Jean Maisonneuve and Jody's brother, Jason.

Maplesoft, which began as an information-technology consulting firm and now has 100 employees, helps companies and governments plan and deliver business and technical projects.

For the 2009-2010 fiscal year Maplesoft is projecting $70 million in revenue, doubling the previous year's, and now has offices in Toronto, Calgary, St. Louis and Dubai.

Campeau said the rapid growth is a result of acquisitions in Toronto as well as the team-orientated culture of their company. "Everyone checks their egos at the door."

Nappert, Maplesoft's executive vice-president of consulting services, got the team involved sponsoring the Alterna Do It For Dad Walk/Run for prostate cancer. The foundation's board of directors saw Maplesoft as a new and upcoming company with a history of charitable giving.

Through that partnership the executive at Maplesoft met the cancer foundation's major players. Six months ago, they sat down with the foundation to talk about furthering that partnership to support Wellspring -- something Campeau said was a "no-brainer."

"Giving back for us is key, because people really take pride in it and (through) their hard work and our successes as a company we turn around and give back to the community," Campeau said.

The work of the foundation, and Wellspring's focus on support for cancer survivors, is something their employees -- some of whom have been touched by cancer -- can get behind, he said.

And having their name on the centre, he said, is a reminder for their whole team to continue to give back.

The foundation's president and CEO Linda Eagen said Maplesoft's "life-changing" donation made the groundbreaking Thursday a reality.

"It's so critically needed in our community right now," Eagen said. "The doors aren't even open and I'm getting calls on a regular basis."

But it's not just the money. Eagen said that from Day One Campeau and his executive rolled up their sleeves and joined her team at the planning table, helping build the technology infrastructure of the new centre -- a database for patients, teleconferencing, video surveillance -- and leveraging their partners to get the best deals.

With the help of infrastructure funds from the federal and provincial government, Wellspring is scheduled to open its doors by late 2011 to early 2012.

Philanthropy is not a new venture for this tech company. Two years ago, Maplesoft started the Maplesoft Children's Foundation, which runs a summer camp for underprivileged kids. And as hockey lovers, the team was inspired to fund non-profit hockey organizations in Ottawa and Calgary.

James Bowen, a professor at the Telfer School of Management at the University of Ottawa, said it's not uncommon for tech businesses to feel the need to make charitable donations.

"I think a lot of it is just the corporate culture," Bowen said. Often tech startups wouldn't exist without community support, he said, so it's not surprising when a company returns the favour.

And Maplesoft isn't the only tech company to recently step up their commitment to the Ottawa community.

Protus, an Ottawa-based company specializing in web-based communications tools, recently announced it would assume the role of lead sponsor for the Canadian Cancer Society's three Ottawa Relay For Life runs.

The employees, roughly 90 when the company started out, took on the relay as their corporate sponsor when the wife of a co-worker was facing cancer. She became involved in the relay, said marketing and communications manger Tara Landry, who also serves on the office's relay committee.

"For a lot of us it's still a tribute to her," she said. "It means a lot to everyone here."

They've tried to keep that motivation as a grounding point in the fundraising they do as their company and sponsorship commitment grows.

"We're not just some tech corporation that's nameless and faceless," Landry said. "We all live here and we're a part of this community."

Maplesoft Group™ donates $1.8 million dollars to the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation

OTTAWA, ON – May 18, 2010 - The Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation today announced a $1.8 million donation to the 2010 Courage Campaign. The significant donation was made by MAPLESOFT GROUP as more than 200 volunteers, donors and supporters gathered at the Hampton Inn and Conference Centre for the official launch of the next phase of the Cancer Foundation’s Courage Campaign.

“MAPLESOFT GROUP is proud to align itself with the work the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation is doing in our community,” explains Jody Campeau, President and CEO of MAPLESOFT GROUP. “The Cancer Foundation has made it a top priority to improve the lives of local residents by ensuring they have access to the best possible care close to home, access to new therapies, shorter wait times and overall improved quality of life – and that is important to our management team and our employees.”

The 2010 Courage Campaign is led by Peter Charbonneau, General Partner of Skypoint Capital Corporation and Fred Seller, partner of Brazeau Seller LLP. They have gathered a team of dedicated volunteers that will help raise $50 million for cancer priorities in our community.

“As a cancer survivor I know first-hand the importance of investing in cancer research projects right here in our own community,” says Peter Charbonneau. “By supporting our local scientists and researchers we are giving local patients the opportunity to access to the very latest treatments and new therapies.”

Fred Seller continued: “Today’s important donation by MAPLESOFT GROUP is one of the largest investments in cancer care our community has ever seen. They are a shining example of how businesses can make an important impact in the battle against this disease. Their investment is going to directly impact thousands of local cancer patients and their families.”

With today’s announcement, the Courage Campaign has raised $29.3 million for cancer projects and priorities in our community. This is an extension of the first phase of the Courage Campaign which raised $20.5 million in 2008, including supporting the construction of the new Irving Greenberg Family Cancer Centre and funding $5 million for the Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre, 25% of the private sector goal for that facility. The $50 million total will fund gaps in the cancer care system by providing close to home care, shortening wait times for diagnosis and treatment, fund cancer research and innovative therapies and improve the quality of life of cancer patients and caregivers.

For Maplesoft Consulting and its Partners, who proudly support and contribute to minor hockey, being in the presence of all that culminated in the success of the 2009 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championships was a "once in a lifetime" experience.

"The whole tournament was outstanding." commented President & CEO Jody Campeau. "What this did was reaffirm what my Partners and I have believed about youth, sport and our communities for many years. It was absolutely inspiring knowing that the players in front of me were once the same kids in the minor hockey systems we’re supporting today. It fostered a lot of excitement and pride to know that the kids we’re supporting right now could have the opportunity to be on this very same stage in five, ten - fifteen years. You can’t describe it."
